In 21st century, smartphone,
tablets and computer are popular use in our daily life. Software programmers developed a lot of
social media platform for us to share our feelings, our happiness, our loves,
lifestyle, attitude, personality, social life in our friendship’s network and
it is also a collective of online communications channels for people. Social media brought
the world and people closer together and over the years it has evolved to be a
critical tool in the way for communicates. Mashable (Stark, 2011) in partnership with (CNN iReport) they honor this impact June 30 was a Social Media Day.
What is social media?
Social
Media (Nations, 2016) use a very simple way to define the term and it can
be looked at each word individually. The “social” can be referred to
interaction with people by sharing and receiving information. The “media” can be an instrument or medium of
communication such as internet. Social media (2016) in
Wikipedia
defined social media is a computed-mediated tools that allow people or
companies to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, pictures and videos in the
virtual communities and networks. The common features for social media
are internet-based applications, users can be a person or organizations generate
or create their specific profiles or content in the platform. Those social media platform can facilitate
the development of online social networks by connecting the users either individuals
or groups.
The most popular social networks worldwide in 2016
Base on the Global social media research summary 2016 (Chaffey,
2016), the
statistics on social network usage and growth I will recommend Global Web Index

and engagement with different social networks. Those research was conducted in quarterly base
and their global sample size were more than 40,000 internet users.

Facebook
How Facebook
get more attention from the Facebook fans page?
In my friend’s Facebook, I saw a colorful
running picture from his photo sharing in his status updates. Oh my god! He attended a color running event
on last summer. I was curious and want
to know more about this event.

From the Facebook photo
hashtag #ColorRun #Happiest5k , I
found more information, photos and also know that who has attended this event
on last year. The sharing of photos, it
draws me and my friend’s attention to this event. We found out the event is link to “The Color
Run”. The world’s first COLOR 5k™ event,
was founded in March 2011 as an event to promote healthiness and happiness by
bringing the community together to participate in the “Happiest 5k on the
Planet”. This events has been hosted
over 200 cities and 40 countries every year. Also I checked the link from The Color Run, it
was a for-profit event management company which partner with some charities to
organize the event for fundraising programs.
Since 2012, The Color Run have raised donations for more than 80 local
and national charities and to date it has donated
more than $4 million to charity. It was
fun to know this event from my friend’s Facebook page. I start following this event in The Color Run Facebook
fans page and see when will have the next event held in Hong Kong.
Follow up in The Color Run Facebook page, I know about
the event status and saw their users’ updates.
It seems I am part of the participants in the event already. Through my
Facebook friend’s network, my friends also alerted I was a fans in this event, some
of my friends have planned and made a group to join this event in next
year. It’s not coincident, all the
things happened was between our social media platform through the Facebook, it was funny and interesting.
Apart from this
funny color running event, my Facebook’s friend also invited me to join another
event last year. “Slide the City Hong Kong” which was the 1st
ever slide the city with a harbor view, the biggest summer
party held in Hong Kong on 22-24 August 2015.
The party was good for the family and youngster to join. After the event, there were a DJ party, live
music band and dance performance show, food stalls and snack for people to
enjoy the food and play with friend.
The organizer posted the event detail on the Facebook event
page to boarden their network and let more people to know this event especially
this is the 1st slide event in Hong Kong. With the powerful friendship network and the
higher publicity in the internet. Many
people felt excited when they know this event will be held in Hong Kong soon and
those early-bird tickets were sold out 2 months before the event day.
From the Facebook page message and inquiries, organizer
reacted quicky and instant respond to the Facebook fans that they will have
another round early-bird tickets for the public to purchase in the internet which
was keeping the ticket purchase atmosphere in good condition. Even though there were problems for ticketing
arrangement, organizer also respond instantly to the participants with a
professional way. Those action and
respond showed that the organizer was well trained and paid close attention to
the public.
During the event, the organizer also arranged a video contest
for the Sliders to capture the great moments and took
part in the Best Video Contest by uploading their exclusive video to the Slide
the City Facebook page with hashtag #ActionCamSTCHK in caption! The winner will
get a SONY Action Cam valued at HK$3,480.
The best costume wearing also can win a big prize in the event. Those competition and contest attracted the
participants to have more intention or interest to join in.
Using
“Hashtag” in the Facebook
What is “Hashtag” doing in the Facebook? How can it
promote the event? From the Wikipedia, it defined a hashtag is a type of label or metadata tag used on social network which can make the
users to find the message with a specific theme or content easily. Users can create and use hashtags by placing
the hash character # in front of a word or a phrase without space in the main
text of a message or at the end.
Search the hashtag then the message has been tagged will present.
In these events, we can see people were using
hashtag function to post their event photos or video share with their Facebook
friends, updated their status or check-in the event to increase their exposure
to their friend’s network. Usually, celebrities
or event organizers will use this function to increase their image and brand
awareness to the public.
Implement the Facebook
CTA to create sales
Another advantage in Facebook
is CTA, it can stand for "Call To Action" which is a tool that helps
Facebook events connect closely with the event organizer and make their goal
success such as increasing event ticket sales or get more noise from this event.
Simply insert a CTA in the Facebook page
then it can easily engage your target fans and followers to your event website or
the registration page.
Venture Beat, a
leading source for news, events, groundbreaking research company. They use “CTA” in their GamesBeat Summit Facebook
page. The organizer created a “Sign Up”
button while the fans viewed their Facebook page, just simply click that “Sign
Up” icon. Facebook will direct the fans
to another administration pop-up screen for the attendees to enroll this event so
that the organizer to estimate how many people will attend the event. It can create a fast ticketing service for
the GamesBeat Summit event. A faster way
and cost saving channel to help the organizer to promote their event and doing
the ticketing service.
